the ENVIRONMENT and sustainability award

The award recognizes excellence in the application of engineering, geological and geophysical methods towards preservation of the environment and the practice of sustainable development.

The award is intended to have a broad scope, open to a wide range of projects, achievements, initiatives and activities contributing to the preservation of the environment and/or contributing to the concepts of sustainable development. Activities that might be considered suitable for nomination include, but are not limited to:

individual or group contributions to environmental awareness, preservation and reclamation through education, leadership and/or involvement
individual or group contributions to sustainable development through education, leadership and/or involvement
processes, products or systems that constitute an advance in environmental preservation or sustainability
projects that exemplify the principles of sustainable development with associated regard for the environment
projects that result in the preservation or restoration of the natural environment

The award may be made:

to an individual, for his/her contribution towards the goals of the award. The individual must be a Member of APEGGA
to a group of individuals, for their contribution towards the goals of the award. All individuals in the group must be Members of APEGGA. However, groups led by an APEGGA Member(s) may also be considered for the award
to a project, in recognition of its contribution to the goals of the award. The project must have been completed, or have reached a significant degree of completion in the award year, and the project leader or company responsible for the project must be a Member of APEGGA. Projects within Alberta will be given priority, but projects located outside of Alberta may be considered, in which case they must include a significant professional contribution from APEGGA Members

Environment: Means the components of the earth and includes:
i) air, land and water
ii) all layers of the atmosphere
iii) all organic and inorganic matter and living organisms, and
iv) the interacting natural systems that include components referred to in subclauses (i) and (iii).

Sustainable development: means development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs through the balanced application of integrated planning and the combination of environmental and economic decision-making processes.

EVALUATION CONSIDERATIONS

Project description and systemic issues: A description of the project and associated environmental issues, for example: How long the project has been going? What is the end point? What is the total impact to the environment? How were sustainability concepts included in the project? Will it be/has it been successful over the longer term? What is the impact of energy or raw materials usage in the project? What is the systemic benefit?
Maximum 20 points

Environmental impact: benefits to the preservation of the environment or application of sustainability concepts.
Maximum 20 points

Application of professional skills: application of engineering, geological or geophysical principles to the highest standards and results towards the goals of the award.
Maximum 20 points

Project location: highest marks for an Alberta location or for another Canadian location, lower marks for export locations.
Maximum 10 points

The application will be evaluated out of a maximum of 70 points and each area of evaluation should be commented on separately.

REQUIREMENTS

Complete the nomination form in full and attach documents describing the nominee(s)/project and its achievements which, in the opinion of the nominator, qualify the nominee(s)/project for the award, together with such supporting evidence as they may wish the Honours and Awards Committee to consider.
