One Act, Two Association Amendments Pass

The Hon. Iris Evan

The EGGP Act amendments have passed third reading in the Alberta Legislature and received Royal Assent – APEGGA and ASET can now embark on a new era of technologist regulation. Employment, Immigration and Industry Minister Iris Evans, the minister responsible for the act, congratulated the two organizations at a reception at Government House in Edmonton, last night. She acknowledged the hard work of the discussion team to arrive at the One Act, Two Associations memorandum of understanding, as well as efforts of government, ASET and APEGGA staff. Watch for your July PEGG for full details.

On Getting There
& Being There

Dr. Jim Montgomery, P.Eng.

It takes superior achievement to earn a Summit Award. But well before you or your peers walk across the stage in April, it takes nominations. That’s why our campaign is underway now to find APEGGA’s best and brightest for the next Summit Awards Gala – which is, after all, just 10 months away. A series of stories on 2007 winners kicked off in the June PEGG. Although we accept nominations year-round, watch for the official 2008 call in the centre section of the July PEGG.

Guarantor Changes

The federal government is making it simpler to obtain and renew passports. In fact on Oct. 1, guarantors won’t have to be on the list of approved professionals.

Climate Change Opinion Survey

What are your opinions on the science of climate change? Do you have a role to play? How about your professions and your Association? Questions along these lines will be asked in a September survey – an Environment Committee initiative using the e-PEGG, the website and the hardcopy PEGG to reach members.

Use of Geophysical Instruments –
Request for Comments

APEGGA has prepared a near-final draft of a new guideline for Use of Geophysical Instruments in Near-Surface Investigations. The document outlines those areas of practice where non-geophysicists may use geophysical instruments without violating the exclusive practice provisions for geophysics as defined in the Engineering, Geological and Geophysical Professions Act.

Before completing the final draft, the Professional Practice Department is seeking constructive comments on the document. Please direct your suggestions to APEGGA Professional Practice Department, Attn: Ray Chopiuk, P.Eng., Director, Professional Practice, at rchopiuk@apegga.org , by Aug. 31, 2007.
