Why Sustainable Buildings?
Alberta Chapter – Canada Green Building Council

The Alberta Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council will discuss why sustainable buildings are important and produce better quality environments both inside and out, last longer by being more durable and adaptable, cost less to run and are a benefit to the community. Klaas Rodenburg, Alberta Chapter Chair will review the benefits of sustainable buildings and specific integrated attributes of the Robbins Health Learning Center that contributed to LEED Silver certification. Tanya Doran, Executive Director, Alberta Chapter CaGBC explains the changes to the current LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) process and what will be required if you currently hold your LEED AP designation or it is a future consideration. After the presentation join us for a tour of the Robbins Health Learning Center showcasing the sustainable attributes.

The price of solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity continues its march downwards. Its global market has been growing at 43% per year for the last 15 years. Nominal price reductions are ~10% per year. Huge new silicon foundries and module factories are expected to reduce the cost by 30% by 2011. The PV module manufacturing price barrier of USD$1/W has just been broken. Manufacturers now say that the price of solar PV energy will be on par with grid electricity by 2015 or sooner.

As we approach this solar PV tipping point, what does this mean to us? With Alberta’s vast solar energy income, need for clean energy, and new gridconnection regulation, Alberta is poised to join the solar industrial revolution. Is this possible? What big factors affect the price of solar PV energy? Subsidies? nterest rates? Environmental values? Government policies? What opportunities and challenges does PV face in Alberta – organizational, technical, policy, perceptions, environmental, green jobs, training, competing technologies?

Mr. Laurie Danielson, Executive Director, Northeast Capital Industrial Association (NCIA)

Mr. Danielson will provide an overview of NCIA, its key focus areas, and projects that NCIA is currently working on. NCIA is a not-for-profit cooperative representing industry located in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland which includes the municipalities of Strathcona County, Sturgeon County, the City of Fort Saskatchewan and Lamont County.

Member companies range from large integrated global chemical and petro-chemical industries to industrial service companies. Current industrial investment in manufacturing plants and infrastructure in the region already exceeds $25 billion and an additional $20 to $40 billion in investment is expected in the next 10-15 years.

Mr. Beckett will provide an update on issues of interest specifically to members as well as some broader issues related to public safety and environment. Please join your President and fellow members for an exchange of ideas and information.
