Q&A:
1. What is the objective of the APEGGA Lakeland Branch?
The Lakeland branch represents APEGGA in our geographic area (Ashmont, Bonnyville, Brosseau, Cherry Grove, Cold Lake, Elk Point, Grand Centre, Lac La Biche, Mallaig, Medley, Spedden, St Paul, Two Hills, Willingdon). We help to advance APEGGA's mission by assisting Council and staff to carry out their responsibilities primarily in the areas of Communications, Public Affairs and Professional Development.
2. What are the specific goals of the APEGGA Lakeland Branch?
In conjunction with other APEGGA groups, we focus on two audiences – the public and members. The specific activities we support are as follows:
Public
i. Promote science and technology in local schools, as part of APEGGA's Outreach Program under the direction of APEGGA's Outreach Coordinators. An example of this is the branch science Olympics that typically takes place in March. Last year we attracted 41 teams of 6 students each! The branch also helps in judging school science fairs.
ii. Enhance and promote the image of the professions in their communities, as part of APEGGA's strategic initiative under the direction of APEGGA's Communication & Public Affairs Department. This is accomplished via promoting the APEGGA Teacher Awards where 20 teachers are each presented with a certificate and $2,000 to be used at their discretion for professional development, school equipment, resource materials, website development, teaching aids, or other tools to improve teaching and student learning.
Members
i. Provide opportunities to network with members and the public in order to assist career development, to problem solve, and to understand the other professions in the Association. The Lakeland branch helps put on the Annual APEGGA / ASET Golf Tournament taking place on Sept 10th, 2011 - you should have received an e-mail about this on Aug 15th. We also put on the Annual APEGGA President's Visit that happens early February.
ii. Provide local professional development and other programming needs tailored to the branch members' needs, as part of APEGGA's Professional Development Program under the direction of the Professional Development Department. The branch targets two events per year. Previous events have included a tour of the local air force base and a tour of the fish hatchery.
3. How many people attend these executive meetings?
Typically, it is a small group of approximately 10 individuals. We're always looking for volunteers or members that are just interested in staying informed about the local branch
What's the format of these executive meetings?
We are pretty informal. There are usually only 5 or 10 minutes where we discuss upcoming activities, who's spearheading the initiatives, and another other concerns or initiatives members would like to discuss. These meetings are a great networking opportunity to find out what your fellow APPEGA members are up to in the region!
