Alberta as an Energy Superpower

As Alberta’s economy continues to boom, the idea of the province as an energy superpower has developed with it.  What are the implications of finally having the oilsands recognized as being the second largest oil reserve in the world?  With this recognition there is also a growing awareness of the responsibility associated with fossil fuel development in a world moving to a carbon constrained future.  What is the energy future in Alberta with dwindling conventional fuels and growing alternative fuels?  This presentation will explore the current state and ask the question, what is Alberta’s energy future?

Edmonton United Way Consulting Engineering Challenge

“There is no power to change greater than a community discovering
what it cares about.”

- Margaret J.  Wheatley

Over the past few years, several Edmonton and area engineering consultingcompanies have come together to strengthen the communities they live and work in through a partnership with the United Way.

This year and for the first time, employees from the supporting companies will take part in a Consulting Engineering Challenge. All the companies involved are competing for the right to be named 2007 Consulting Engineering Challenge Winner.

Points will be given to each company for employee participation, employee giving and best practices. The overall challenge winner will be announced in January 2008 at the APEGGA Edmonton Branch luncheon and awarded the soon-to-be-coveted Consulting Engineering Challenge Trophy.

This year’s supporters are Associated Engineering, Bantrel, Colt Engineering, CoSyn Technology, EBA Engineering Consultants, ISL Engineering & Land Services, Magna IV Engineering, SNC-Lavalin and Stantec

To kick off this year’s challenge, employees from the supporting companies will unite on the Consulting Engineering Challenge Day of Caring, Sept. 28, to build an outdoor playground for KARA Family Resources Centre. KARA provides family services that include parent education, early childhood services, family supports, and information and referral.

If your company wants to become involved, contact Laurin Cross at 990-1000 or lcross@uway.ab.ca. She will be pleased to enroll you in a development program that will position you to participate in the Consulting Engineering Challenge in your second year.

Orest Ilkiw, P.Eng.
