Celebrating Innovation is the theme of this year’s National Engineering & Geoscience
Week, Feb. 24 to March 5, and we encourage you and your family to join the festivities.
Across the province during NEGW, APEGGA is sponsoring events and activities to
showcase the impressive work of engineers, geologists and geophysicists.
Celebrating Innovation recognizes the significant contribution that engineers, geologists and geophysicists make in every segment of the economy, as well as the way in which your technical and management expertise helps Alberta remain at the forefront of innovation in science and technology. NEGW is also designed to increase public awareness about your critical role in the everyday lives of Canadians.
For the 11th consecutive year, APEGGA is publishing a newspaper supplement in the Calgary Herald and the Edmonton Journal. Look for it in the Feb. 23 editions of those papers.
NEGW kicks off Feb. 24 with official events in Calgary at Fluor Canada and
in Edmonton at Stantec Inc. Professional engineers and geoscientists will compete
in a fun and spontaneous corporate challenge.
Other organizations are also planning activities in celebration of NEGW. Fluor
Canada in Calgary, for example, will host that city’s first Canstruction
event. Canstruction Calgary will bring together engineers, geoscientists, architects,
designers and others from the engineering, geoscience and construction communities.
They will work as teams to build structures using canned food.
The sculptures will be judged, put on public display and then “de-canstructed.” All of the food will be given to the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank.
This is a fun challenge that requires team effort, communication, creativity, imagination, building, resourcefulness and heart.
Other events taking place around Alberta include classroom visits by members and mall science exhibits.
If your organization plans to host an event during NEGW, please feel free to contact APEGGA and have it added to the events list on the APEGGA website.
Celebrations with Students
Students will get to experiment, create and race against each other and the clock
to win gold in this year’s science olympics, being held in several Alberta
communities. These olympics do not concentrate on physical strength and stamina,
however, but on problem-solving skills and cooperative group work, as teams put
their knowledge and skills against those from other schools.
APEGGA sponsors the science olympics to promote excellence and innovation in science learning for students. Science olympics is a fun-filled and stimulating event, in which pre-registered student teams discover first-hand the connection between classroom concepts and their practical, everyday applications. Students will compete in a series of pre-planned and mystery events designed to test their knowledge of scientific processes, challenge their skills and consider practical and unconventional solutions to unique problems.
The Calgary APEGGA Science Olympics takes place Feb. 25 in the Big 4 Building at Stampede Park. Edmonton hosts its version on March 4 at the Shaw Conference Centre. Science olympics will also be held in Peace River on Feb. 25 and in Lloydminster, Medicine Hat and Red Deer on March 4.
