NACE Integrity Seminar Hits Right Note

Submitted by
NACE Calgary Section

The National Association of Corrosion Engineers Calgary Section recently held a one-day seminar in Medicine Hat on integrity issues related to shallow gas gathering pipeline systems. It was a successful seminar that had the right message for the local audience and pulled together a great group of speakers to deliver that message, demonstrating why you might be interested in finding out more about our organization.

Topics included corrosion mechanisms and failure analysis, corrosion inhibition and monitoring, pigging, cathodic protection, leak detection and new pipeline regulations. A case study was also presented that promoted good discussion and many questions in the question-and-answer session that followed.

Speakers brought in items for show such as

  • corrosion monitoring equipment

  • various types of pipeline pigs

  • quad-mounted flame-ionization detection equipment

  • high-density polyethylene segments and examples of fusion joints

  • specimens from internal corrosion pipeline failures.

These items added vitality to the presentations and made good conversation pieces during the breaks.
There were about 175 attendees from over 20 different oil and gas companies, and a variety of vendor and service companies and contractors based in various parts of North America.

The people who volunteer their time to NACE are committed to improving safety, reducing spills and improving equipment reliability. Seminars like this are important and effective ways of sharing information that meets those objectives.
