Conferences Kick Off New Year for U of A Geo Students

The new year has only just begun and the events have already started. The Western Inter-University Geoscience Conference 2006 was held Jan. 5 to 8 in Calgary, with almost 30 people from U of A attending. That’s down a few from 2005 but still a good turnout.
The conference was well planned by the committee at the University of Calgary and I think everyone from the University of Alberta had a good time.

A big hit was the EUB/AGS Core Lab Research Centre and the University of Calgary 3D Seismic Imaging Centre tour. The students who attended said they really enjoyed the facilities. A thank you goes out to all the volunteers who put together this year’s conference and we look forward to seeing everyone next year in Winnipeg.

A second conference of the year quickly approached for those interested in the mining industry. A contingent of U of A students made its way to Vancouver for the Mining Roundup at the end of January. Hopefully a few came back to Edmonton with some job prospects.

Coming in 2006
With 2006 now in full swing it is time for all of us to ease back into the school atmosphere again and try not to break our New Year’s resolution — the one about not leaving all assignments until the night before. The time is coming soon when all the work that went into those assignments finally pays off.
Our department graduation banquet is coming up at the end of March, so planning is going full steam ahead for that. All of this year’s graduates are quite excited about that night, as it serves as a highlight of the winter for many of those involved.

This year’s event will have a group of grads performing in a makeshift band, and will also offer the traditional slide show to demonstrate to our parents (and possibly remind ourselves) how their children acted when they were dropped off at university for four (or five or six) years.

The hockey season has started up yet again, with all three of our intramural teams having a game under their belts. Plus we have been organizing a few games of shinny on the outdoor ice to get some extra practice.

Hopefully all the practice helps when our P.S. Warren Geological Society meets the U of C’s Rundle Group in Red Deer this semester at our annual hockey game, called the Trad Cup.
