When we discuss APEGGA membership with new graduates and other potential members, a question often asked is, “What’s in it for me?”
The simple answer, of course, is that APEGGA provides you a licence to practice engineering, geology or geophysics, and under Alberta law, you need our licence to practice.
But there is much more that we do. Though licensure and the enforcement of
the EGGP Act make up our primary purpose, APEGGA offers a wide range of benefits
and other services to its members.
What’s In It For Me? is a series of articles describing these programs.
Travel is often an important part of the practice of engineering, geology and geophysics. Visits to the worksite, to the field, to the client, to the supplier and to a multitude of other locations — these form part of the due diligence expected of professionals.
Further, members travel for professional development, to volunteer with APEGGA or their technical societies, and even, if time permits, for personal pleasure.
With all of this travel, it is no wonder that APEGGA includes hotel discounts as part of our member benefits.
As is the case with a number of our member benefits, the buying power of our 44,000 members makes this offer possible. In addition, however, is the fact that APEGGA itself is a major customer of hotels in the province — for branch meetings, Council events, and, of course, our Annual General Conference and the events that surround that.
Through APEGGA’s event planners, Barb Robinson and Shirley Layne, a number of hotels and hotel chains offer corporate rates that individual members would not normally have access to. To date, over 50 hotels in Alberta, Canada and the United Sates have signed on to provide discounts to APEGGA members.
All APEGGA members, including ASAP student members, members-in-training, life members and others, are eligible for the program. Your APEGGA membership card is your proof of eligibility, so ensure that you carry it at all times.
