U of A Engineering Students
Plan March Elections

BY KORY MATHEWSON
University of Alberta Student Columnist (Engineering)

The University of Alberta Engineering Students’ Society is pushing through the 2007 academic year and now enters March. The month brings some of the most exciting times for the U of A’s future engineers.

Most important, with March comes a change in the board. Elections will be held and new executive members will grab the reins of our society.

Before those tides of change roll in, however, March offers an array of events and activities to ease our minds during our academic challenges.

Past Events

Between Jan. 24 and 28, a group of engineering students represented the University of Alberta at the Western Engineering Competition in Vancouver. This was a great opportunity for the winners of the U of A engineering competition to showcase their skills against other schools.

With the return of our 16 delegates came great news. The University of Alberta will be represented March 8 to 11 in Saskatoon by four students competing in consulting design. Rebecca Pinto, Bryce Pinto and Bok Der, all student members of APEGGA, and Rob Joseph grabbed first place at WEC, which earns them a chance to compete at the national level.

Way to go, team!

The Electrical Engineering Club was crowned Geer Week winner recently after some hard competition. This marks the second year in a row that the EEs have won Geer Week, and word is that they’ve already begun preparation for next year.

Amazing work, EEs!

PIES WILL FLY
Engineering students at the University of Alberta will once again put on the Pi Throw, this month.

The Engineering Students’ Society came out of Reading Week, Feb. 19 to 23, and moved right into a very exciting schedule. National Engineering and Geosciences Week, known as NEGW, wound up March 3.

This week featured a number of events for individual students to display their skills, among them the speech competition. As well, a number of events, such as the CAN-demonium food drive, had students banding together by their disciplines.

Results were still being tabulated at deadline, but winners will be announced in my next column.

Upcoming Events

Results of the Engineering Students’ Society board executive elections were not available at press time. Watch for winners’ names next month.

March 12 to 16 is the ESS Pi Throw. This has students and faculty buying pies, which are then sent to friends and colleagues — who receive them, graciously, in the face. An exciting fundraiser for the ESS, this event is sure to raise a good amount of support and camaraderie, which are both needed as finals approach.

On behalf the Engineering Students’ Society, thank you so much for the continued interest in the ESS at the University of Alberta.
