Emerald Finalists Named

 

The 36 finalists and their projects have been chosen for the 2006 Emerald Awards. The Alberta Emerald Foundation presents the awards annually to Alberta groups and people that show outstanding initiative and leadership in facing environmental challenges.

APEGGA is represented by permit holders nominated for their efforts in a variety of projects. Dow Chemical Canada, EnCana Corporation, Husky Energy Inc., Petro-Canada and the City of Edmonton all qualified in the large business category. The City of Calgary is nominated in the government institutions and Agrium Inc. is nominated in research and innovation.

Other categories include not-for-profit association, community group, individual commitment and youth. Among nominated projects are A Lifetime Commitment to Sustainable Operations in Canada’s Boreal Forest, the Naturescape and Prairie Grass Labyrinth, and Encouraging Water Conservation. Also nominated were the University of Calgary’s Solar Car and NAIT’s Fuel Cell Applied Research Project.
Nominees total 113. Winners of each of the 12 categories will be announced at a gala at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton on June 14.
