Several recent Alberta projects received 2006 Prairie Design Awards, sponsored
by the Alberta Association of Architects — and they were completed with
the aid of APEGGA permit holders.
Under recent work, the award of excellence was given to the loft apartments on
107th Street in Edmonton. Permit holders among the listed team were TICA
Engineering and Protostatix Incorporated for their work in structural engineering, as well
as Frontline Engineering Concepts Corporation for its work in mechanical and
electrical engineering.
The award of merit in the same category went to the Rothney Astrophysical Visitor Centre in Priddis. Structural engineering was done by Kassian Dyck & Associates.
In heritage restoration/ conservation, three projects were given the nod by the Prairie Awards. The award of excellence went to the recapitalization of the Jubilee Auditoriums in Edmonton and Calgary. Stantec Consulting Ltd. was responsible for structural, mechanical and electrical engineering.
Awards of merit went to the McLeod Building and the Shaw Building in Edmonton. Mechanical and electrical were done by Frontline Engineering Concepts Corporation on the McLeod Building. The Shaw project included work from Kapitol Engineering Ltd. for mechanical and Frontline for electrical.
An interior design award of merit was presented Caron & Partners LLP project in Calgary. Structural engineering was completed by Stantec Consulting, mechanical by TMP Consulting Engineers, and electrical by Mulvey & Banani International.
The North American Society for Trenchless Technology has awarded Stantec Consulting Ltd. with an Industry Achievement Award for its contributions to the development of the infrastructure-related technology.
The achievement awards are presented to municipalities, companies and other organizations that have, over the past 15 years, contributed to the promotion of trenchless industry either through education, design and construction of significant projects, technology enhancements or industry participation.
David Krywiak, P.Eng., received the award on behalf of Stantec in Nashville. While there, he also presented a technical paper he co-authored. It detailed the design and installation of St. Albert’s new sanitary trunk sewer using trenchless technology.
Universities from around the world gathered in San Antonio, Tex., to compete in the ACM International Collegiate Programming contest. More than 5,600 teams of three people were narrowed down to a group of 83 finalists.
The University of Alberta was one of them.
Andrew Neitsch, APEGGA Student Member Sumudu Fernando and Zachary Friggstad earned a bronze medal and finished 11th. Winners were presented medals based on the number of problems solved and the time taken.
Fred Kirkham, P.Eng., joins the ranks of Blackpool Exploration Ltd. as vice-president, engineering. With more than 37 years of senior reservoir engineering to draw on, Mr. Kirkham will oversee all of the company’s engineering activities.
Gerrit T. Maureau, P.Geoph., has been appointed as president of the Canadian Petroleum Institute. Mr. Maureau takes over the post from interim president Craig McDonald, who has held the position since 2003.
Greg Kondro, P.Eng., has joined the management team at Spitfire Energy Ltd. Mr. Kondro will assume the role of vice-president, operations.
Dr. David Sego, P.Eng., has been named as executive vice-president of technology at Wentworth Oil Sands. Dr. Sego joins the company as the lead in research and development at a time when Wentworth moves to commercialize its patented hydrocarbon separation technology.
Jock Graham, P.Eng., has been appointed vice-president of Loon Energy Inc. Mr. Graham will be based in Dubai.
Rod Hume, P.Eng., has moved into the vice-president, engineering, position at Delphi Energy Corp. Mr. Hume was previously the senior exploitation engineer at Delphi.
PrimeWest Energy has hired Brian Lynam, P.Eng., as vice-president of operations. Mr. Lynam comes to PrimeWest from Burlington Resources Canada Ltd.
