Compliance
Quality Control Experience Comes To Compliance

Editor’s Note: Compliance statistics appear on page 19 for this issue only, to make room for this story introducing a management addition to the department’s team.

He rose quickly up the ranks of his first employer after graduation from the University of Alberta in 2001. Now Michael Neth, P.Eng., is taking what he learned to the world of self regulation.

MICHAEL NETH, P.ENG.

For just over a month, Mr. Neth has been on the job as APEGGA’s new Assistant Director, Compliance. He fills an opening created in the Edmonton office when Frank Perich, P.Eng., moved up to Director, Compliance.

“I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s very interesting and challenging work,” said Mr. Neth, a mechanical engineer.

At G.L.M. Industries, Mr. Neth was most recently director of engineering and quality. It’s a position he’d held since 2008 — his responsibilities had kept increasing since he joined the company in May 2001 as a junior design E.I.T.

G.L.M. is a steel plate fabricator, specializing in design, fabrication and repair of storage tanks and pressure vessels, as well as custom fabrication. It has several manufacturing facilities and multiple field sites across Alberta and Saskatchewan. From 2005 on, Mr. Neth was the Responsible Member for G.L.M. under APEGGA’s permit-to-practice system.

What he learned in industry crosses over nicely to his new position, Mr. Neth said. “Much of what I did involved working with codes and standards, so it’s quite similar to the codes, standards and systems in Compliance. I’ve also done audits and investigations, and they’re a good fit as well.”

The Compliance Department enforces exclusive right-to-title and right-to-practice provisions of the Engineering, Geological and Geophysical Professions Act. The department strives to ensure that the people and businesses that should be licensed actually are. It also stops people and businesses not qualified from duping the public by practicing illegally or suggesting they’re licensed.

Mr. Perich said it’s great to have a young, fresh perspective on industry joining the staff. “Mike is the proverbial fresh blood an organization like ours benefits from. He’s fitting in well and learning the ropes quickly — he’s a quick study,” said Mr. Perich.

When he’s not at the office, Mr. Neth likes to spend time with his family, work around the house, travel and generally stay active. He and his wife, Kandis, have a son Aiden, turning four, and a two-year-old daughter Kylie, as well as a baby on the way.
