checking in

Editor's Note: Checking In, a regular feature of The PEGG, is designed to keep you up-to-date on APEGGA's numerous and varied programs and initiatives. Consider it a project report and news digest, with website links and PEGG references to help you find out more.

√ Out-of-Province Campaign
Did you know that 90 per cent of the APEGGA Compliance Department’s work is proactive? One example is the out-of-province campaign.

To uphold regulatory requirements, provinces exchange lists of members living in other jurisdictions. When APEGGA receives these lists, Compliance staff members check each name for registration with our Association. Non-members are then checked against the Compliance database and files are opened as required.

In 2004 the department checked over 4,000 names for APEGGA registration.

√ APEGGA/ASET Joint Registration Board
The APEGGA/Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists Joint Registration Board has reviewed 14 registered engineering technologist applications since the beginning of the year. Once registered as an R.E.T., a person can then apply for registered professional technologist status with APEGGA.

There are currently 1,501 R.E.T.s, and 141 of them also have R.P.T. status. The joint board was established to confirm that individuals approved for registration as R.E.T.s meet the requirements of the Engineering Geological and Geophysical Professions Act’s regulations and bylaws. Specific goals of the board include reviewing applications and ensuring applicants meet criteria acceptable to the board.

An R.P.T.(Eng.) performs engineering without supervision, but only in a narrow, defined and pre-approved scope.

The joint board is made up of five APEGGA members and five ASET members, and is supported by both APEGGA and ASET staff.

√ AAPG/CSPG Convention
The American Association of Petroleum Geologists and its host, the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, held the AAPG’s annual convention in Calgary for a Global Round-Up, June 19-22. This is the first time in over 10 years that the AAPG has held its convention in Calgary, and it was attended by 7,799 delegates.

APEGGA sponsored two luncheons during the event. First was a Division of Professional Affairs luncheon on Tuesday, June 21, which featured Texas State Geologist Scott Tinker as guest speaker. The second luncheon was the Joint Division of Environmental Geosciences and Energy Minerals Division Awards luncheon on June 22, and it featured Jim Dinning, chairman of the Canadian Clean Power Coalition, as guest speaker.

At the conclusion of Mr. Dinning’s presentation, Neil Windsor, P.Eng., APEGGA Executive Director and Registrar, officially thanked Mr. Dinning.

APEGGA also had a booth at the tradeshow, where we saw over 200 delegates.
