PERMIT TO PRACTICE

Corporate Permits Require Attendance At PtoPS

The issuing of permits to practice to practicing companies is an important element of APEGGA’s obligation to regulate the professions. Many Responsible Members named on those permits tell us that they are unsure of their responsibilities. A seminar, where members can discuss these obligations, appears to be the most effective way to clarify the roles. To this end, APEGGA introduced the mandatory Permit to Practice Seminar in September 2003.

To date, close to 7,000 Responsible Members have attended the PtoPS, and based on the feedback we’ve received, over 90 per cent supported the need for it. The free seminars clearly explain the duties of CEOs and Responsible Members relating to the APEGGA permit, and the role that APEGGA plays in regulating the professions of engineering, geology and geophysics. Further, we introduce the topic of risk and loss management in professional practice, and discuss it with attendees.

Seminar attendance at least once every five years is mandatory for everyone named as a Responsible Member on an APEGGA permit. You are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to fulfill this professional obligation.

Please use the link in the More Info box to find the seminar schedule and registration form. If you are unable to attend one of the free seminars in person, the link will also provide you an electronic option that satisfies the requirement. Seminar dates in Edmonton and Calgary are now posted on our website through to the end of 2007.

What You’ve Said

We keep track of what attendees think of our Permit to Practice Seminar, and we refine content based on feedback. Comments are usually positive, as the selection below suggests.

  • Attended thinking was a mandatory requirement to continue practicing, left having gained significant insight С re-orientation as to where our duties lie within a corporate setting.

  • First company in 25-plus years as a P.Eng. where I am working for a company that has a permit to practice С very helpful in helping me understand what is a permit to practice.

  • I received more information than I expected. I attended a bit reluctantly, but now I am glad that I attended.

  • Too rushed.

  • Great! Refreshing and created a renewed interest in APEGGA for me.

  • Thanks С very inspirational reminder of our corporate and professional responsibilities.

  • Useful, I am glad I attended. It will change some of our operations.

  • Enjoyable and informative session. More of this kind of small, interactive session with APEGGA would be appreciated.

  • A painless way to review this mater-ial and make sure the Association stays respected and strong.

  • Very beneficial for a new owner of an engineering company. Good presentation.

  • Paternal. Professional tone would be more appropriate. Organization is too focused on regulatory. Could have a higher profile with membership if not as dictatorial.

  • The presentation covered a lot of area in the short period of time. I recommend especially for the junior engineers to attend.

  • I was very surprised at the high level of useful info and have had my eyes opened to the extent of responsibilities and my company will change procedures and operation for the better.

  • Very comprehensive. More relevant than expected.

  • Some questions a bit long-winded and could be cut short.

  • This was an eye-opener in terms of what the role of a Responsible Member is. I will be approaching the COO and my supervisor about whether I should be an RM, given my limited influence within the overall organization.

  • Very good seminar! As a Responsible Member I am now more aware of my responsibilities and how to manage risk.

  • Excellent presentation. Answered all my questions regarding the permit to practice.

  • The presentation was conducted in a very well-organized and professional manner. It was a pleasure to attend such a presentation.

  • The best risk management presentation I have ever attended.

  • Excellently done. Gives you something to think about to ensure that guidelines and responsibilities are documented and met.

  • Gave me lots of information that I wasn’t truly aware of since only began business three months ago. Well done. Thanks.

  • If we all follow the process then our profession will improve! Well done. APEGGA needs to continue to be proactive. Doing a good job!
