There are teachers who make school cool and there are also teachers who make math and science fun and exciting to learn. Thanks to 1,158 nominators, the 2008 APEGGA Teacher Awards Program found 146 Alberta teachers who do both.

Nominators had phenomenal science and math teachers to write about. Their heartfelt stories and comments resulted in portrayals of remarkable and memorable teachers making profound changes in the lives and learning of their students.

In the well-put words of one nominator, “The impact this teacher had on my life will remain for years to come.”

Judges evaluating this year’s nominations found the work particularly tough. The calibre of potential winners was extremely high. Nominators did their homework and made sure they addressed the four criteria judges look for, like making sure they were supported by a variety of other nominators.

Many nominations were well organized and supported by students, parents, teaching colleagues, school staff and school administrators. Nominators also made sure that they provided examples of how the teachers inspire and excite students in their learning. They also told our judges about the extracurricular activities and other qualities of their teachers.

A total of 14 Alberta teachers were selected as award recipients. The cash award to the school of each teacher award recipient was increased to $2,000 this year.

Each recipient is given the discretion to decide how the money will be spent at the school to enhance science education, math education or both. The teacher award recipient also receives a certificate and a copy of his or her nomination package. Winners will also honoured at events hosted by APEGGA and the branches.

President Gordon Williams, P.Geol., has sent letters of congratulations and thanks to all recipients and nominees. Nominees also receive certificates of nomination and their nomination package.

Congratulations and thank you to these educators for their enthusiasm, their excellence in teaching and their inspiration to Alberta youth, particularly in the studies of science and mathematics.
