Foundation Addresses Need
For Improved
Communication

BY CONNIE PARENTEAU, P.ENG.
Education Foundation Past President

Part of the APEGGA Education Foundation’s business plan identifies a need to enhance our current communications. We have put that goal into motion — at the September board meeting, a draft Communications Plan 2006-2008 was presented.

The plan identifies our audiences and key messages. It also documents possible strategies with specific tactics to get the APEGGA Education Foundation’s messages out.

The following are extracts from the draft plan.

Challenge
To reinvigorate the Foundation through new and sustained communications and marketing activities aimed at raising the awareness of APEGGA Members and other potential donors of the work the Foundation does and the need to support the Foundation directly through donations.

Background

  • Foundation was created in 1996 as a registered charitable organization separate and distinct from APEGGA.

  • Foundation Mission is: ‘To enhance and provide leadership and support in the education and development of engineers, geologists and geophysicists, and those who might enter these professions.’

  • Foundation provides scholarships, some bursaries and grants for educational projects

  • To sustain the Foundation’s current level of scholarships, bursaries and grants, $100K must continue to be raised annually.  This amount must be increased regularly to match increases in the cost of education

  • The Foundation needs to raise at least $1.1 million endowment to add to the Foundation’s current capital base of just over $900K to achieve a capital base of $2 million

  • Currently have named and endowed scholarships at the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge.

  • Foundation has access to the APEGGA Member database and in-kind support from APEGGA.

  • There is currently a check-off donation option on Member dues invoices.

  • Currently a move away from funding projects toward exclusive focusing on scholarships and bursaries.
