Schulich Scholars Meet Industry Reps

The Schulich School of Engineering has kicked off its annual Engineering Associates Program Breakfast Series by introducing industry representatives to 24 incoming winners of major  Schulich scholarship awards.

The program began in 1991 as partnership allowing the local engineering industry to advise the engineering program. This helps make sure the school is meeting the needs and demands of the profession.

The associates program  is critical to furthering Schulich School of Engineering initiatives, says Dr. Elizabeth Cannon, P.Eng., the school’s dean. “When we look at what we have achieved, we see that we do not do it alone. To find our key champions we need not look farther than the Engineering Associates Program,” she says.

Program events provide students with direct contact with industry leaders — a true benefit to the student experience. “It is an excellent opportunity to learn about what is going on in the community,” said Schulich scholarship recipient Lise Malta.

Industry likes the relationships the program builds as well.

“We work with the University of Calgary in partnership,” explains program member Wayne Wheeler, manager of human resources for McElhanney Land Surveys Ltd. “We see students as our primary consumers and the U of C as a secondary consumer. In turn, the university sees industry as a primary consumer.

“That kind of synergy creates excellent opportunities.”

The Engineering Associates Program event schedule continues Nov. 3.
