FORT McMURRAY VIEWS
APEGGA Council sometimes meets beyond the centres of Calgary and Edmonton — and that was the case, last month, when the oilsands and Fort McMurray were on the agenda. During these visits, Council spreads the word about its self-regulatory obligations and forges connections with local leaders.

Top is a scene within a 104-hectare parcel of land named in the first-ever oilsands reclamation certificate. The Alberta Government awarded the certificate in March for Gateway Hill, a site that Syncrude Canada once used for overburden. Oilsands companies are required to reclaim all the land they disturb.

Above left is Mike Allen, a Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo councillor and a representative of the Fort McMurray Chamber of Commerce. He brought greetings to a Council dinner held before the actual meeting the next day.

Above right is a wingtip view of the community of Fort McMurray, which grew to about 65,000 people from under 7,000 between 1971 and 2006.
