Canmore Centre
Celebrates Silver Anniversary

IN RUNDLE’S SHADOW
Rick Green, P.Geoph., speaks at celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre.

Supporters have honoured another milestone in the history of the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre. The museum has served the town of Canmore and the Bow Valley for 25 years, preserving its roots as a mining centre and, more recently, promoting its growth as a tourist destination.

On Sept. 12, supporters celebrated the anniversary at the museum site at the foot of the iconic Mount Rundle — a setting ideal for promotion of the geosciences.

For over five years, APEGGA has provided an annual grant to help the museum society in its role as a community resource for geoscience and for students interested in geoscience as a career. This year, APEGGA donated a pair of stereoscopic examination microscopes to serve as a foundation for rock and fossil identification projects. That presentation occurred during a Geoscience Day event May 23, sponsored by APEGGA and the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

APEGGA also sponsors an annual rock and fossil clinic through its Outreach Program. The 2009 event takes place about the time The PEGG hits the street, on Saturday, Oct. 17.

All APEGGA members and their families — and the general public — are invited to visit.  Bring your pet rocks along for identification and help in unlocking their stories.

Expert lithographers will be on hand to assist you, and there will be an informal talk by members of the Core and Cuttings Division of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and members of APEGGA.

The clinic reaches out to school children, amateur rock hounds and ordinary people who are interested in rocks. Since the event is advertised in Banff and other Bow Valley municipalities, visitors from as far away as Switzerland have attended and joined in the fun.
