APEGGA Chief Operating Officer
A few years ago, we were faced with a dilemma. Although well respected and well established as one of the premier recognition programs in the country, our Summit Awards were suffering from too few nominations.
The quality of the winners was certainly still there, but we believed the trend towards fewer nominations would eventually hurt us. Certain awards might not be presented. Simply being nominated might, in some cases, be enough to win because of the lack of actual competition.
We mounted a promotional campaign which had the desired effect. In 2005 we attracted about 20 nominations and now we stand at about 40 annually.
Now, we’ve identified another challenge. We don’t receive enough nominations from the part of our profession that most of our members work for — operating companies and consulting firms. The selection committee would love to have more industry nominations to consider. With that in mind, we’re working closely with a number of outside organizations to whip up some interest. There is no reason, for example, that the winner of a Consulting Engineers of Alberta award can’t also be nominated for a Summit Award.
I’ve also sent personal appeals to many of our permit holders. As I said in the letter, we all take pride in the work we and our colleagues do. How about sharing that pride with the rest of the professions and the public? If you know individuals, projects or groups deserving recognition for outstanding accomplishments or exceptional careers, let’s celebrate them.
We are looking for nominations in 11 areas, which are
leadership
service to the professions
mentoring
technical excellence
teaching
excellence early in a career
community work
outstanding project
environment and sustainability
research
contribution to the professions by a person not licensed by APEGGA.
Deadline for nominations eligible for the 2010 Summit Awards is Oct. 31. Visit
