MICHAEL JONES |
DR. VINCENT TAO |
Things have become even more interesting for a major global information systems conference, this month at NAIT in Edmonton. Not only will one of the co-founders of the company that became Google Earth share his insights into the rapidly expanding role of GIS, during the Nov. 16 conference. Now, a major Microsoft Virtual Earth executive is also booking his flight north.
Michael Jones, chief technical officer of Google Earth, will give one of the keynote addresses at the second annual NAIT Computer Training Centre GIS Earth Day Conference. Dr. Vincent Tao, the director of Microsoft Virtual Earth, will attend the conference as well. Dr. Tao is responsible for the technology and business development of the Microsoft Virtual Earth program.
Dr. Tao will kick off the conference with his talk, Microsoft Virtual Earth: New Horizons in Mapping and Geomatics Services.
Among other presenters will be Dr. Joseph Berry, a renowned GIS scholar, consultant and software developer from the University of Denver, Michael Schlosser, P.Eng., of Autodesk, and Dr. Touraj Nasseri, P.Eng., of Alberta Infrastructure.
The day “promises to be an intensive, educational and exciting event,” says
information from NAIT.
A major attraction will be Mr. Jones, formerly of Keyhole, the company Google
bought to create Google Earth. These days, Google Earth is receiving more than
100 million unique downloads a year.
The conference reflects the emerging and wide-ranging role of GIS technology.
It’s not just about finding your way to a new address.
In fact, GIS relates geography to all manner of data, affecting everything from marketing and business decisions to the construction of infrastructure and the application of agricultural inputs.
