Geologist Wins Two Major Service Awards

DR. MCILREATH’S EXCELLENT YEAR
Dr. Ian McIlreath, P.Geol., poses with his award. At left is Colin Yeo, P.Geol., an APEGGA councillor, and at right is APEGGA Past-President Dr. Gordon Williams, P.Geol. Each of them is a past CSPG president.

It’s been a good year so far for Ian McIlreath, P.Geol., a past APEGGA councillor and the outgoing Alberta director on the Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists. In April, APEGGA honoured him with the prestigious L.C. Charlesworth Professional Service Summit Award for diligent service to the professions and the Association.

Then, only a few weeks later, the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists presented Dr. McIlreath with its highest honour, the President’s Special Recognition Award. The award has only been presented four other times in the organization’s 82-year history, and Dr. McIlreath becomes only the second person to receive it.

The award recognizes individuals, institutions and organizations “whose sustained efforts have brought great honour and distinction to the society and the geoscience community or have provided significant, outstanding and sustained contributions to Canadian petroleum geology,” says a citation read at the award reception. The event was held in conjunction with a convention of CSPG and two other geoscience societies, May 4-8 in Calgary.

Dr. McIlreath has spent over 32 years serving society and the professions. He’s served on many executives, often chairing and leading major committees. He’s has been an active member of many more groups, some of them international in scope.

He’s received major national service and technical excellence awards from Earth science societies, including the H.M. Hunter Award from CSPG and, from the Geological Association of Canada, the J. Willis Ambrose Award for distinguished service to Earth sciences in Canada. He is an honorary member of the CSPG and a distinguished fellow of the Geological Association of Canada.

In 1983 Dr. McIlreath became the CSPG’s youngest president. He was president of the Geological Association of Canada in 1992.

Dr. McIlreath has also served the broader community. He sat as a board member on the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Awards Foundation, the Burgess Shale Foundation and the University of Calgary Senate. He currently sits on the board of trustees of the Canadian Science and Technology Museum Corporation in Ottawa.

He has authored or co-authored more than 60 scientific publications, talks and public presentations, and has had a long and varied career in industry within Canada and internationally.

For the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, Dr. McIlreath has made significant contributions by chairing a number of committees and now GeoCanada 2010. He also delivered three important reports to the CSPG executive within a two-year period on awards, office management and strategic planning.

Dr. McIlreath has “selflessly shared his time providing guidance, counsel and advice to several (CSPG) executive committees,” the citation said.
