Memorial Foundation
Awards Scholarship To U of A Undergrad

VERONICA HARING . . . CEMF scholarship winner.

The Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation has named APEGGA student member Veronica Haring as the recipient of the 2009 Prairie Region — Undergraduate Scholarship Award.

The second-year civil engineering student and campus ambassador at the University of Alberta received $5,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the awards luncheon.

Ms. Haring was presented the award in Montreal, in an event held in conjunction with the Engineers Canada annual general meeting, May 22 in Montreal.

For the past three years, Ms. Haring has returned to her former high school where she supports students in a life skills class. Using the experience she has gained from her time spent with the students, she has been able to offer respite care to some of their families. In 2008, she combined her engineering and teaching skills to develop a science workshop for students with physical and mental disabilities.

The Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation was formed and incorporated in 1990, honouring 14 women slain at the École Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec 6, 1989. The CEMF’s goal is to provide inspiration and opportunities for young people, especially women, to pursue careers in engineering.

Each year regional undergraduate scholarships are awarded to students in their first, second or third year of an accredited engineering degree program — Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie and British Columbia. Applicants must be leaders who go out of their way to inspire others through their involvement in the community, as well as promote engineering through local high schools. Academic achievement is not a criterion.

The foundation also awards a post graduate scholarship of $15,000, named after one of its original founders, Claudette McKay-Lassonde. It recognizes not only the community involvement criteria but also a research and teaching involvement.

Corporate support comes from Vale Inco, AMEC and IBM, which have each established a variety of scholarships at the undergraduate, master’s and PhD levels, ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. The master’s scholarship also comes with an offer of summer employment.
