Great teachers help Alberta create great students and great professionals, which is a form-ula APEGGA and the APEGGA Education Foundation are pleased to support. In late October and early November, the 2006 Excellence in Education receptions celebrated top teachers and student scholarship winners.
Alberta Education Minister the Hon. Gene Zwozdesky attended the Edmonton reception on Oct. 24, along with Alberta Teachers’ Association President Frank Bruseker and Edmonton Catholic Schools Superintendent Joan Carr.
APEGGA President Dave Chalcroft, P.Eng., and Executive Director & Registrar Neil Windsor, P.Eng., presented certificates to 2006 APEGGA Teacher Award winners and nominees. Connie Parenteau, P.Eng., the past president of the APEGGA Education Foundation, and Dr. Raj Rajan, P.Eng., one of its directors, presented scholarships and awards to students.
A similar program in Calgary was held Nov. 7, after The PEGG went to press.
Established in 1991, the APEGGA Teacher Awards Program recognizes exceptional math and science teachers in Alberta. In 2006, 122 teachers were nominated throughout the province.
Fourteen teachers in the province received teacher awards, each of which includes a $1,000 donation to each of their schools to promote science and math learning.
The APEGGA Education Foundation was established in 1996 as a registered charitable organization. Through its awards and scholarships program, the foundation provides monetary support and public recognition to outstanding students entering or continuing their studies in engineering, geology and geophysics each year, and to the children of APEGGA members in pursuing their post-secondary education in their chosen fields. The foundation currently administers 75 scholarships and awards. It receives money from APEGGA, relies heavily on generous donations from members, organizations and the public, and issues tax receipts.
