Memorial Foundation
Adds Scholarship For 20th Anniversary

The memory of those who died at École Polytechnique 20 years ago is kept alive through the numerous scholarships provided by the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation, each year. A news release from the foundation says it is “dedicated to attracting more women to the engineering profession so they may contribute in a truly inclusive manner.”

The CEMF scholarships honour the memory of the 14 women from École Polytechnique whose contributions to Canada ended in a mass murder on Dec. 6, 1989.

The foundation was formed the next year, so it will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2010.  Suzelle Barrington, ing., the foundation’s president, says supporting and encouraging women to pursue a career in engineering continues to be the group’s focus.

To celebrate its anniversary, the foundation has established the CEMF 20th Anniversary National Scholarship for Women in Engineering. Part of the criteria for this $10,000 scholarship requires applicants to interview a previous scholarship winner on how receiving the scholarship has benefited her and helped her achieve her goal of becoming an engineer.

“As we approach two decades of supporting women in engineering, over 100 women from across Canada have received one of our scholarships,” she said.

Deadline for applications for the 2010 CEMF Scholarships is Jan. 15. Recipients are selected based on their strong leadership skills.

“For many recipients, the scholarship went way beyond the financial support offered — it provided the confidence required to excel as role models and ambassadors for the engineering profession,” said Ms. Barrington.

The generosity of the foundation’s donors and supporters now allows for 13 annual scholarships to be awarded to women across Canada, ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 at the undergraduate, master’s degree and PhD levels of study.

All scholarship winners will be honoured at the annual CEMF Awards Luncheon, held in conjunction with the Engineers Canada Annual General Meeting in late May in Vancouver. Winners are featured in a promotional brochure sent to universities, provincial associations, donors and stakeholders across the country.
